Special Medicare Enrollment Period Available to Those Affected by Oregon Wildfires

Special Medicare Enrollment Period Available to Those Affected by Oregon Wildfires

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for those who have been affected by the wildfires in Oregon.

Beneficiaries affected by the Oregon wildfires are eligible for a Special Enrollment Period that gives them an extended opportunity to take action in the event they were eligible for another election period and were unable to make an election because of the wildfires. This SEP extends the ability to enroll in a plan from December 8 to January 31.

Who qualifies for the SEP?

The special opportunity to enroll in, disenroll from or switch Medicare health or prescription drug plans applies to all Medicare beneficiaries who:

  • Reside, or resided at the start of the incident period in any ATRIO service areas except Polk County*; and
  • Missed their age in enrollment opportunity; or
  • Did not take action during AEP;

*In addition, the SEP is available to those individuals who don’t live in the affected areas but rely on help making healthcare decisions from friends or family members who do live in the affected areas.
