The Benefits of Sunscreen
Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? It also has an important job — to protect you against bacteria, germs, and shield your body from harmful UV rays. However, that doesn’t mean your skin can take care of itself. Here are five reasons why you should make sunscreen your friend.
1. Prevent Skin Cancer
According to The Centers For Disease Control (CDC), one of the best ways to reduce your risk of skin cancer is to wear sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. However, the higher the SPF, the better the protection.
The CDC also recommends reapplying sunscreen:
- When you are out in the sun for more than 2 hours
- After swimming or sweating
- After toweling off
2. Reduce Signs of Aging
The sun is a culprit of skin damage and can accelerate the aging of your skin. Basking in the sun without protection can cause collagen damage, leaving you with less elasticity and more wrinkles. If you want to prevent further fine lines and wrinkles, be sure to apply sunscreen to your face and body every day.
3. Avoid Sunburns
Too much sun exposure without protection can cause your skin to burn. Sunburns are painful and can take several days to heal. Sunburns can also increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Avoid sunburns by wearing sunscreen, even on cool and cloudy days.
4. Limit Skin Discolorations
Age spots, also known as sunspots or liver spots, can magnify the look of aging. Age spots are caused by hyperpigmentation of the skin. They typically look flat and discolored with different shades of brown. Sunspots can appear anywhere on your body, but commonly on the face and back of the hands.
5. Prevent Broken Blood Vessels
UV rays can damage blood vessels and cause them to thin. Broken blood vessels, also known as telangiectasias, can give your skin a bruising or bleeding appearance.
Keep your skin healthy all summer long and prevent a host of skin problems and remember to use your sunscreen every day.
