The Mental Health Benefits of Playing Golf

Boosting Mental Health Through Golf

Whether you are an avid golfer or just like to play a game every once in a while, you may or may not realize that you are getting a host of health benefits — both physically and mentally. Here are some ways that golfing can keep our mental health on par!

Manage Anxiety and Depression

Golf is a very cerebral sport. You’ve got to keep focused, plan moves, and execute strategies. By keeping your brain active and in “thinking” mode, you can focus more on the game and less on the things that you may feel anxious or sad about. Playing a game of golf can release the “feel good” endorphins that can combat anxiety and depression.

Reduce Stress

When you feel good from all the endorphins you’ve been releasing, you’ll also become less stressed and more at ease. When playing golf, you must exercise your patience — and with patience comes calmness. When we are relaxed and serene, our stress levels can melt away!

Social Interaction

Even though golf courses in some areas around the country are open for players, social distancing while on the golf course may be necessary to avoid the spread of COVID-19 — but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t enjoy social interaction from 6 feet away from other golfers. Older adults may be more prone to feeling lonely or isolated. Getting out on the golf course can bring friends together. It's also a great way to increase your social circle and make new friends.

Golf is just one way to improve mental health. Staying active and exercising regularly can also keep you mentally fit. As we get older, it’s essential to keep moving to stave off anxiety and depression and reduce stress levels to improve overall health and well-being.
