Health Tips for Aging Men

Taking Charge of Your Health After 60

Thanks to advanced medical technologies, American men are living longer. However, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reports that the average life expectancy of men is 76.2 years — six years less than the average life expectancy of their female counterparts. The good news is that it’s never too late to make some lifestyle changes that can help improve your overall health and wellness and add more years to your life. Here are some helpful tips!

Stick to Your Regular Checkup Schedule

Even if you are feeling healthy, getting regular checkups at least once a year can make all the difference. Your annual checkup can allow you to tell your doctor about any changes or new symptoms that you’re experiencing, so you can get to the root of the problem sooner rather than later.

Don’t Miss Regular Health Screenings

Men who are over the age of 60 may benefit from following screenings as noted by theCenters for Disease Control (CDC):

  • Colorectal cancer (recommended for ages 50 to 75).
  • Lung cancer (recommended for heavy smokers or smokers who have quit within the last 15 years).
  • Prostate cancer (speak to your doctor about this screening, as the United States Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend PSA screenings for those who do not have any symptoms).
  • Skin cancer (speak to your doctor about your risk factors for developing skin cancer and if you should have regular screenings).

Staying on top of health screenings can help detect cancer and other diseases early, which means increasing your chances of survival. Speak to your doctor about which health screenings are right for you.

Eat a Proper Diet and Stay Active

Eating healthy and getting exercise can decrease your risk of developing cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and many other health problems. Try getting in some physical activity at least 30 minutes, five days a week. However, before starting any exercise routine, check with your doctor for clearance. Also, try incorporating the following nutrients into your diet:

  • Calcium and vitamin D (low-fat milk, yogurt)
  • Dietary fiber (beans, lentils, whole grains)
  • Potassium (bananas, spinach, white beans)
  • Healthy fats (extra-virgin olive oil, walnuts, avocados)

Making positive changes like eating right, exercising, and getting regular health screenings and checkups can help men live a longer, healthier life!
