Tips to Help You Reach & Maintain a Healthy Weight

Making the choice to take charge of your health by leading a healthier lifestyle is a great decision. However losing weight and keeping it off takes a little more effort than sheer will-power.

ATRIO Health Plans is here to outline some simple yet effective ways to show your physical and mental health some love and care.

What it Really Means to Be Overweight

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, more than 2 in 3 American adults are considered overweight or obese. But what exactly does that mean?

Being overweight or obese means that an individual has a body weight that exceds what is considered to be normal for their specific height. While being overweight typically refers to an excessive amount of body fat present in the body, being overweight may also be due to the following:

  • Muscle density
  • Extra water retention
  • Dense bones

Measing your body mass index (BMI) is a way to determine whether or not your’re overweight or obese. Your BMI measurement is based on your weight in relation to your height. Although your BMI does not directly measure the fat in your body, a higher BMI can point to a high amount of fat within the body.

Your BMI range can be read in the following way:

  • Underweight: A BMI less than 18.5.
  • Normal: A BMI between 18.5 and 25.
  • Overweight: A BMI between 25 and 30.
  • Obese: A BMI exceeding 30.

Tips For Maintaining a Healthy Weight

As you get older, it is important to make the appropriate lifestyle changes to prevent unhealthy weight gain and maintain a healthy and consistent weight. Because your metabolism slows down over time, keep the following tips in mind to help you continue your health and wellness for years to come:
