Preventing Cataracts As You Age

Cataracts can make vision blurry and hazy, negatively affecting the ability to do day-to-day tasks. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to prevent this common eye issue.

In light of National Eye Exam Month, the health experts at ATRIO Health Plans are here to share some tips that can prevent your lenses from clouding as you get older.

Quit Smoking

Smoking and using tobacco products increases your likelihood of developing cataracts and other forms of vision loss. If you’re a smoker, it is important for you to quit or never start smoking in the first place. For non-smokers, it is just as important for you to avoid secondhand smoke as it can have the same negative health effects.

You can further prevent vision loss related to smoking by:

  • Getting regular physical activity.
  • Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.
  • Maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.
  • Eat a nutrient-dense diet.

Wear Sunglasses with UV Protection

While most of us know the importance of protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful rays when spending time outdoors, it’s important to protect our eyes too! Just like the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, they can also speed up the formation of cataracts,

When heading outdoors, be sure to wear a brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes.

Have Routine Eye Exams

Whether you’ve got 20/20 vision or wear corrective lenses, it is important to stay up-to-date on your annual eye exams. This is because, even if you believe your eyes are in good shape, the only way to know for sure is by seeing an eye specialist and having an exam.

When it comes to addressing cataracts, early detection is key! By seeing your eye doctor regularly, they are able to look out for early signs of cataracts and causes for concern. If you haven’t had your routine eye exam, be sure to make an appointment with your eye doctor today!
