Choosing a Medicare Advantage Plan

Choosing a Medicare Advantage Plan

Making Your Selection Ahead of the Annual Enrollment Period

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Medicare Part C) is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Some plans may also provide extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover—like vision, hearing, dental, and more.

Annual enrollment begins October 15th, and it's essential to consider the following before deciding.

What is Annual Enrollment?

The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP, or Annual Coordinated Election Period) is when Medicare beneficiaries can change their Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage plan coverage for the upcoming year. The AEP starts on October 15th and continues through December 7th, with changes taking effect on January 1st of the new year.

Who is Eligible for a Medicare Advantage Plan?

There are different types of Medicare Advantage Plans, such as Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). Make sure to pick the kind of plan that best suits your needs.

To be eligible for a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must have Medicare Part A and B and live in the plan's service area.

How Do I Choose the Right Medicare Advantage Plan?

There are a few things you'll want to consider when choosing a Medicare Advantage Plan:

  • Do you want extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare?
  • What is your budget?
  • Do you have a preference for a particular type of plan?
  • Do you need prescription drug coverage?
