The Importance of Flu Shots for Seniors

The Importance of Flu Shots for Seniors

It’s flu season, with the Fall seeing an uptick in cases of seasonal influenza. The flu is more than a severe cold; it's a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every year, millions of people get sick, hundreds of thousands are hospitalized, and tens of thousands die from the flu. Those aged 65 and older are particularly at risk, accounting for nearly 70% of hospitalizations of flu.

Why are Flu Shots Important for Seniors?

The flu can be extremely dangerous for seniors because they are more likely to have chronic health conditions, like heart disease, diabetes, and asthma, which can worsen with the flu.

Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu. The vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are in the vaccine.

When Should Seniors Get the Flu Shot?

The timing of the flu can vary, but flu activity often begins to increase in October. The CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. However, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial. Flu vaccines are usually available into January or later.

What Type of Flu Vaccine Should Seniors Get?

There are two vaccines designed specifically for people 65 and older:

The "high dose vaccine" contains four times the amount of antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibodies) as regular flu shots and is associated with a stronger immune response.

The adjuvanted flu vaccine, Fluad, is made with MF59 adjuvant, an additive that creates a stronger immune response to vaccination.

Both have been shown to provide better protection against flu in seniors than standard-dose vaccines.

Protect Your Health

Getting a yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting yourself against flu viruses. It's especially crucial for seniors due to their increased risk of severe illness and complications. Vaccination also helps reduce the spread of the virus, keeping loved ones and the wider community safer. With ATRIO Health Plans, you can find a provider that prepares you for flu season and beyond.
